DuraFlex Crown Repair Nationwide

Every visit starts with

Level 1 sweep and inspection to the NFPA 211 annual standard - flue, crown, cap, and flashing checked and photographed

Worth knowing

Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.

DuraFlex Crown Repair: The Queens Owner’s Guide

DuraFlex crown repair in Queens typically runs $280-$520 installed, depending on flue diameter and whether the wash needs rebuilding beneath it. We stock DuraFlex-compatible crown assemblies and refractory mortar on every truck, and most replacements are completed in a single visit. Most Queens homeowners discover the problem during their annual sweep, or after spotting fresh masonry debris on the roof after a freeze-thaw cycle.

Which DuraFlex Models This Applies To

DuraFlex crowns are not one-size-fits-all. The part you need depends on your flue liner series and the outer diameter of your chimney’s top course.

The DuraFlex 316Ti stainless liner series, common in Forest Hills and Bayside two-families from the 1980s and 90s, uses a specific crown plate with a 6-inch, 7-inch, or 8-inch collar opening. The DuraFlex Pro and DuraFlex SW (solid-wall) lines take a heavier-gauge crown with a welded storm collar. Check the stamped label on your liner’s top termination, or the raised lettering on the existing crown’s vertical band. If the label’s weathered off, measure the flue opening inside the crown collar, not the outer concrete wash.

We carry both OEM DuraFlex crowns and equivalent-grade fabrications from Copperfield. The OEM part guarantees exact fitment for warranty-registered liner systems. The Copperfield equivalent matches the 304 or 316Ti spec and often ships faster, which matters when Queens weather is turning and you’ve got an open flue. Russell Haines has seen mismatched crowns forced onto 7-inch flues with silicone and prayer; they leak by spring. We don’t do that.

Signs Your DuraFlex Crown Repair Is Failing

  • Concrete spalling or cracking on the crown wash. Water seeps through hairline cracks, freezes overnight in January, and pops off surface chunks by March. In Queens, where we get 25 to 30 freeze-thaw cycles some winters, this accelerates fast.
  • Rust staining down the chimney face below the crown. The DuraFlex crown’s metal collar is supposed to keep water out of the annular space. When the seal fails, rust from the liner termination or the crown’s own hardware bleeds down the brick.
  • Water in the firebox after heavy rain. This means the crown is no longer shedding water to the roof. It’s either cracked through, or the storm collar has separated from the flue pipe. Either way, the flue gas path is compromised.
  • Loose or missing pieces at the crown edge. The concrete wash overhangs the brick by design. When chunks break off, water hits the brick directly, and brick doesn’t survive pooled water in Queens freeze-thaw.
  • Efflorescence (white powder) on interior chimney walls. Moisture passing through a failed crown carries soluble salts from the mortar. By the time you see this inside, the crown has been leaking for at least one heating season.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Scope Price Range (Queens)
DuraFlex crown assembly only (6″-8″ standard) $280-$380
Crown plus partial wash rebuild (up to 2 sq ft) $380-$460
Crown plus full wash rebuild and seal $460-$520

What drives the range: flue diameter, whether the existing wash is salvageable, and access. A flat roof in Kew Gardens is straightforward. A steep slate roof in Douglaston with no staging points takes longer and costs more. Every estimate includes the Level-2 camera inspection, the photos, and the plain-English verdict before we start. No surprises on the bill. The 90-Day Done Right Promise covers the installation in writing.

DIY or Call Us?

You can safely check the crown from the ground with binoculars, or from the attic by looking for daylight around the flue pipe where it passes through. What you cannot safely do is work at height on a chimney top with power tools and wet mortar. The crown sits at the highest point of your house, often on brick that’s already compromised. And if you drop a tool down the flue, you’ve got a liner obstruction that requires professional retrieval anyway.

We carry DuraFlex-compatible crowns, refractory mortar rated to 2,000°F, and the storm collars on every truck. Most jobs finish in two to three hours. If it’s wrong, we’ll say so. If we fix it, it stays fixed. Call (516) 531-6315 and a live person will pick up, 24 hours a day.
