HeatShield Damper Repair Nationwide

Every visit starts with

Level 1 sweep and inspection to the NFPA 211 annual standard - flue, crown, cap, and flashing checked and photographed

Worth knowing

Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.

HeatShield Damper Repair: The Queens Owner’s Guide

HeatShield damper repair in Queens typically runs $280-$520 installed, depending on whether the damper plate, frame, or both need replacement. We stock HeatShield-compatible damper components for most series on our trucks, and most Queens jobs are completed in a single visit. Homeowners usually discover the problem on the first cold night when smoke rolls back into the living room, or when they notice the damper plate won’t fully seal and the flue is bleeding heat all winter.

Which HeatShield Models This Applies To

HeatShield produces dampers across several product lines, and the repair approach differs by generation. The CS series (CS115, CS130, CS150) and the older CM line (discontinued around 2016 but still common in Bellerose and Fresh Meadows homes) use distinct frame widths and handle geometries. The current CFS top-sealing dampers share mounting patterns with some Gelco units, but the silicone seal gasket is proprietary, 3/16-inch thick, and must be sourced to HeatShield spec or the unit will leak.

To identify your part, check the stamped model number on the damper frame’s left side, visible with the plate fully open. If the tag is corroded, measure the throat opening to the nearest quarter-inch and note whether the handle is a rotary gear type or a simple pull-chain. We carry both OEM HeatShield dampers and quality aftermarket equivalents from Copperfield that meet the same temperature ratings. For most Queens installations, the aftermarket unit is the better value; for historic co-op approvals or matching existing hardware in a side-by-side flue, OEM is worth the modest premium.

Signs Your HeatShield Damper Repair Is Failing

  • Smoke backdraft on startup. The damper plate isn’t opening fully or is stuck at an angle, choking the flue. In Queens, we see this most often after humid summers when rust swells the hinge pin in older CM-series units.
  • Cold air dropping down the flue. The silicone seal gasket has hardened or torn, or the plate itself has warped from chimney fire exposure. A draft gauge in the firebox will show negative pressure even with the damper “closed.”
  • Handle spins freely or grinds. The rotary gear mechanism has stripped its brass bushing. This is a full replacement, not a field repair, the gear housing is pressed and not serviceable.
  • Visible rust flakes or orange staining. Condensation from a missing or failed chimney cap has reached the damper frame. The rust is progressive; cleaning buys months, not years, before the frame thins.
  • Damper won’t stay open. The tension spring or chain hook has fatigued. On CS-series units, the spring is under meaningful tension and can snap during casual handling.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Component Typical Range (Queens)
Damper plate replacement only $280-$360
Full damper assembly (plate + frame) $380-$520
Additional masonry repair to seat $150-$300

What drives the range: throat size (larger fireplaces need the CS150, not the CS115), whether the frame rust has spread into the surrounding brick seat, and accessibility. A damper in a tight Rumford-style firebox takes longer than a standard opening. Every repair includes a Level-2 camera inspection before and after, photos you can see, and our 90-Day Done Right Promise in writing. The price we quote is the price on the invoice. No surprises.

DIY or Call Us?

An owner can safely check whether the damper opens and closes fully, and whether the handle mechanism feels loose. A flashlight up the flue will reveal obvious rust or gasket damage. What you should not attempt: removing a stuck damper plate, adjusting spring tension, or working above the firebox without proper ladder and roof setup. The spring on a CS-series top-sealing damper is under enough tension to cause hand or facial injury if it releases unexpectedly. We’ve also seen homeowners crack the flue liner by prying against it for leverage.

If it’s wrong, we’ll say so. If we fix it, it stays fixed. Call (516) 531-6315 for a free estimate and we’ll bring the right HeatShield-compatible part to your Queens home.
