Copperfield Chimney Cap Installation Nationwide

Every visit starts with

Level 1 sweep and inspection to the NFPA 211 annual standard - flue, crown, cap, and flashing checked and photographed

Worth knowing

Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.

Copperfield Chimney Cap Installation: The Queens Owner’s Guide

We stock and install Copperfield-compatible chimney caps across Queens, with most replacements running $340-$680 installed depending on flue size and whether your crown needs resealing. Our trucks carry the common 8″×8″ through 13″×13″ multi-flue models and single-flue galvanized and stainless-steel units, so we can usually measure, match, and install in one trip. Homeowners in Forest Hills and Bayside typically call us after spotting rust streaks on the brick or hearing flapping during nor’easters - both signs the cap has loosened or the mesh has detached.

Which Copperfield Models This Applies To

Copperfield has manufactured chimney caps under several series names over the years, and the label matters for fit. The older “Chimney Cap” line (pre-2010) used a heavier 24-gauge galvanized base with welded corner seams, while current production shifted to 22-gauge stainless with stamped corners and a slightly different flange width. If your cap still has a legible label, look for a four-digit SKU starting with 28 or 29 - those are the residential multi-flue series we see most often in Queens two-families and detached homes from the 1940s through 1980s.

Single-flue models are stamped with the flue dimension and either “G” (galvanized) or “S” (stainless). The critical measurement is the outside flue dimension, not the tile liner inside. A common mistake: measuring the liner at 8″×8″ and ordering an 8″×8″ cap, when the flue itself is 8.5″×8.5″ with the clay offset. That half-inch gap lets water run straight down the flue wall. We carry calipers and a sizing gauge on every truck to settle this on-site.

Aftermarket equivalents from Gelco and Olympia Chimney match Copperfield dimensions but use slightly different mesh gauge - 5/8″ on the Gelco versus Copperfield’s original 3/4″. For Queens homes with persistent squirrel problems, we often recommend the tighter mesh even if it wasn’t OEM. We’re an independent service provider, not affiliated with Copperfield, so we match the part to your actual problem rather than pushing a brand.

Signs Your Copperfield Chimney Cap Is Failing

  • Rust stains running down the chimney face. Galvanized caps in Queens typically show surface rust at year 7-10, sooner if you’re within a mile of the water where salt air accelerates oxidation. Once the base metal is exposed, the cap is shedding protective zinc and will perforate within two winters.
  • Mesh screen pulling away from the frame or sagging. The spot-welds on older Copperfield units fatigue from thermal cycling - hot flue gases expand the metal, cold rain contracts it. In Jackson Heights and Astoria, we see this most on caps above gas appliances that cycle frequently.
  • Cap shifted or missing after high winds. The original strap-and-screw mounting on many Copperfield single-flue models relies on friction against the flue tile. After decades of freeze-thaw, that tile can spall slightly, loosening the grip. A cap sitting crooked is a cap waiting to become a projectile.
  • Water in the firebox or rust on the damper. This means the cap is either missing entirely, the lid is cracked (rare but happens with galvanized units that took a direct hit), or the corner seams have separated. The damper rusts first because it’s the lowest point where water collects.
  • Birds or squirrels audible in the flue. Copperfield’s 3/4″ mesh excludes raccoons but not determined starlings or nesting squirrels. If the mesh has corroded through at any point, you’ve got an open door. We inspect with a camera to confirm whether the animal has built a nest below the smoke chamber.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Service Price Range
Single-flue galvanized cap, standard size $340-$420
Single-flue stainless cap, standard size $420-$520
Multi-flue stainless cap, up to 18″×18″ base $520-$680
Crown resealing (required if crown is cracked) $180-$340 additional
Flue tile repair/spalling correction $120-$240 additional

The range depends on three things: cap material (stainless lasts decades longer in Queens’ wet winters), whether we need to fabricate a custom base for an oversized or offset flue, and the condition of the crown beneath the cap. We won’t install a new cap over a crumbling crown - that’s throwing good money after bad, and we’ll show you the photos so you can see why. Every installation includes new fasteners rated for masonry, a bead of high-temp sealant at the crown interface, and our 90-Day Done Right Promise in writing. If it’s wrong, we’ll say so. If we fix it, it stays fixed.

DIY or Call Us?

An owner can safely do two things from the ground: confirm the cap is actually missing (binoculars, from the sidewalk) and check whether water is entering the firebox after rain. Everything else requires a ladder, and chimney work in Queens means dealing with pitched roofs, often with multiple flues at different heights, and parapet walls on row houses that make ladder placement awkward.

We’ve retrieved too many homeowner-purchased caps from backyards in Fresh Meadows and Kew Gardens after a gust took them. The strap-tightening that looks secure from the ladder often isn’t - the screw bites into soft tile instead of anchoring to structure, or the cap overhangs the flue unevenly and catches wind like a sail. Our technicians carry masonry anchors, tapcons for concrete crowns, and the torque drivers to set them properly. Most jobs take 45-90 minutes. Call (516) 531-6315 and we’ll give you a firm number before we book.
